The Poor White House

It's taking a beating in the movies lately. I'm sure our parents just love seeing the previews for these horrific scenes of terror and destruction in DC.

Isn't funny how they always seem to come out in two's (i.e. Armageddon and Deep Impact)

Historic

Whatever your feelings, I think everyone can agree that we're witnessing history.

Hello Sunshine

It was beauitful over the weekend! I went running outside for the first time in a long time and I was loving life! The mall was so crowded with other like-minded people eager for Spring.

...And then it snowed today on my walk to work. :(

Dolcezza

And the deliciousness continues...

Oh Gelato. I remember the first time I ever tried Gelato was in DC while on my high school's concert choir trip, I think we were in a Smithsonian.  And it's so great for so many reasons, not the least of these being that it has half the fat and calories of regular ice cream. So when some friends suggesting going to Dolcezza, a lovely little Gelato shop in Dupont, of course I said yes.  Let me just list off some of the flavors for you: Avacado Honey Orange, Bananas Foster, Blood Orange, Meyer Lemon Vodka, Perrydell Brown Butter, Postachio Siciliano, Chocolate Rocher, and my favorite, Thai Coconut Milk. And there were a bunch of others, but I ended up getting the Thai Coconut Milk and Niccolattia (sp?) it was a delicious chocolatey hazelnut flavor. It will be the perfect respite during the hot, muggy summer months in the city.

Things That Must Go

A few things that really must go:
  • Will Smith's spawn. Stop trying to force your children on us (i.e. After Earth
  • Taylor Swift. I think the problem might be you honey.  Just a hunch.
  • Politicians. Words like loathe, despise, and hate just don't quite cover how I feel about them all.
  • North Korea's crazy anti-American propaganda.  Watch this bizarre video to see what I mean
  • "Street Cleaning" in DC.  It's started again...
  • The fact that even though I got a raise for 2013, my paychecks are smaller this year because of tax increases. Thanks Congress/Obama. Oh and thanks for voting to give yourselves a pay increase despite the massive debt and you all (Congress) having the one of worst approval ratings ever. You're the best!
  • Google Reader will not be available after July.  Not okay Google, not okay.
  • Speed Cameras.  We found out that DC made over $85 million last year from tickets from traffic cameras and because it was such a success, they are installing 160 more around the city. Yipeee! (We've actually never gotten a ticket from one of these, but it's comforting to know they are out there in force.)
And because I would hate to have purely negative things on here, here are some good things too
  • Loving our Turkish towels
  • Spring is right around the corner, the cherry blossoms are due at the end of this month!
  • The fact that it's still light outside when I get off work at 6
  • Eastern Market. I know, I know I've already dedicated an entire post to it, but I'm head over heels.
  • Amazon. It's just the only way to go sometimes (most of the time), and getting packages in the mail is like a mini Christmas morning.
  • The fact that we got a snow day recently and it wasn't snowing in DC at all. It was pretty amazing/pathetic.
  • We are going to the Outerbanks  in May and cannot wait!!! I can't remember the last time we had a beach vacation.  I've been making a mental list of all the stuff to do and see and places to eat and play tennis and our hotel is right on the beach and I can't wait!
  • Getting to watch Back to the Future with Brody the other day.  Somehow he'd never seen it before and it was like watching it for the first time through his eyes.  Plus, the references to the future are pretty funny considering 2015 is only two years away. Two years until flying cars and hoverboards. Can't wait!
  • Pitch Perfect. It's so good. And any movie that does an ode to The Breakfast Club is obviously in my good graces.
  • Brody got into GW's criminal law clinic for next year! He's pretty amazing.
  • My grey booties from Target (pictured above). I love them. They are so cute and so comfy. I highly recommend.

Eastern Market

On Saturday I met a friend at Eastern Market and completely fell in love. I wish I had gone sooner (someone, at some point, had told me you could only go really early on Satuday morning--lies!). It's incredible!

It's a huge, outdoor flea market / farmer's market / arts and crafts market.  I was in heaven, strolling through the rows of tents with all kinds of handmade jewelry, antique furniture, vintage posters and prints, turkish towels, antique door knobs and hardware, pillow covers, clothes, scarves, and all kinds of fun decor stuff. Then, there's the food market... with everything you could ever want.  All fresh from local farms and Amish country. It was two hours of pure temptation and delight. Lots of free sampling and friendly vendors. I may have bought a red velvet whoopie pie made with fresh Amish cream. And to top everything off, it was the perfect day outside; 60 degrees, sunny, and not humid at all. I am still a little giddy just thinking about it.  I ended up getting some Turkish towels for the bathroom, I'd been wanting to try them forever and just couldn't pass it up.  (I was also really tempted to buy these Turkish killim pillow covers but I restrained.....for now).

Afterwards, Courtney took me to a crazy little used book store, right by the market, that was like something out of a movie. There were books everywhere. Stacked to ceiling, in every nook and cranny (including the windows). It was crazy, and my claustrophic senses were tingling.  I would call it somewhat organized hoarding.

Jumbo Slice

Last weekend Brody and I finally made it over to Adam's Morgan to try the original Pizza Mart Jumbo Slice (it's kind of the Ray's pizza of DC) and it was sooo tasty!  Their moniker is no exagerration either, the slices are massive!

*I may or may not be trying to entice people to come visit with food posts ;)
